A major goal of Heptares’ in-house research is the discovery and development of a pipeline of first-in-class or best-in-class NCE and antibody candidates directed to select GPCRs as potential outlicensing opportunities. Heptares is advancing multiple NCE and antibody discovery programmes in disease areas with clear commercial potential, including CNS, metabolic, inflammation and cancer, and aims to outlicence selected pre-clinical candidates prior to Phase I (first human trials). The Company's first project has, only 18 months from initiation, resulted in the discovery of highly novel small molecule antagonists of the A2A receptor and is now in candidate selection phase as a potential new treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Heptares is also aiming to sign a limited number of strategic partnerships with pharma and/or biotech companies in which it will generate novel NCE and/or antibody leads to partner designated GPCR targets in specified disease areas. Heptares entered into its first agreement of this type, a single target deal with Novartis in 2009, potentially worth more than $200 million.
